POWER TO INSPIRE - LET THE WORLD FOCUS ON TAIWAN 2016 WTA TAIWAN OPEN - Event Announcement Press Conference

Taipei, Taiwan, September 23rd, 2015 – Taiwan Open organizers today announced that Taiwan will host the first ever WTA International level tennis tournament in 2016 at a ceremony held at Taipei City Council and attended by Wen-Je KO, Mayor of Taipei.

After years of hard-work and communication with the WTA, the owners APG and tournament organizers: IS Media, PCG Bros Sports Management, and the International Sports Development Association of Kaohsiung City are proud to announce that Kaohsiung has been selected as the host city of the first Taiwan Open. The tournament will be held between 6-14th February and offer USD $500,000 prize money and further enhance the tournament’s status within the WTA.

"I am so honored that we are bringing Taiwan Open to fans in both Kaohsiung and Taiwan. Everyone will have the opportunity to see world-class tennis and cheer for our players competing with other great players in our homeland, to see those legendary top players in action will be exciting for all, " said Lai Kao Chen, Chief of International Sports Development Association of Kaohsiung City. "It is a great opportunity of international marketing to show the world how great Taiwan is,” Mr Lai Kao added.

Taiwan Open will be the first time any professional high-level tennis event, WTA (Women’s) or ATP World Tour (Men’s), ever to be held in Taiwan’s tennis history. The Taiwan Open will be a showcase for Taiwan to everyone around the world attracting significant global exposure. It will continue to build on the foundations of Taiwan’s sports history, as the Taiwan Open ‘let’s the world focus on Taiwan’.

 

In addition, the tournament will link closely with the WTA by activating the WTA: POWER TO INSPIRE global marketing campaign, that allows Taiwan fans to experience the best professional tennis event in the country and inspire the world to focus on Taiwan by entwining tennis with Taiwanese unique city culture.

“We warmly welcome the Taiwan Open into the WTA Family as we continue to expand throughout the Asia-Pacific region. We are looking forward with anticipation to seeing the world focus on Taiwan next February,” stated Melissa Pine, VP WTA Asia Pacific who also flew into Taipei for today’s launch.

The WTA is the global leader of women’s sport and the Taiwan Open will contribute strongly to the national economy through financial investment and national and global media exposure. The tournament is expected to be seen by hundreds of millions of viewers worldwide next year through its international broadcaster partners, while negotiations with domestic broadcasters are also nearing completion.

With a consistent position on the WTA calendar, Taiwan Open will blossom into one of the best WTA international tournament with fans around the world being able to watch the tournament or visit Taiwan to experience the event and everything the country has to offer.

Taiwan Open will attract the best players each year with WTA rules permitting the tournament to sign a maximum of two WTA Top 10 players and a host of other marquee players to showcase their amazing talents for the Taiwanese fans.

“I am looking forward to letting the world focus on Taiwan Open next February. We have already received a lot of strong interest from players about the event and we can’t wait to announce our first marquee player line-up,” said Stephen Duckitt, Taiwan Open Tournament Director.

The tournament will also provide Taiwanese players with greater opportunities to gain WTA ranking points and test their skills against the world’s best, through participation in qualifying and the awarding of wildcards directly into the main draw for both singles and doubles.
